Pulse Oximeters & COPD

Pulse oximetry is a method of determining oxygen saturation or the percentage of hemoglobin in arterial blood that is saturated with oxygen. It can be used to check pulmonary function, or how well lungs are functioning, in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other lung conditions.
When you have COPD, your healthcare provider might use pulse oximetry to determine whether supplemental oxygen is needed, and how much. When your condition suddenly worsens, your doctor may use pulse oximetry to decide whether you need to be hospitalized. Pulse oximetry can provide useful information in a variety of situations and conditions as well. During or after sedation for surgery, an anesthesiologist might use pulse oximetry to monitor your blood oxygen levels. In addition, pulse oximetry can be used to detect when a person's breathing stops during sleep apnea.
Equipped with Bluetooth & ATC

Rossmax SB210 Fingertip Pulse Oximeter

The Rossmax SB210 Pulse Oximeter is equipped with our Artery Check Technology (ACT) and analysis the pulse and SpO2 signals. Besides the normal pulse oximeter measurements it determines the actually prevailing stiffness of the artery (Artery Condition). ACT further comprehensively classifies the arterial condition into 6 levels and presents the result by an intuitive graphical visualisation. Pulse rate, SpO2 and the artery condition are available at your fingertip!

What is Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease that affects breathing. COPD refers to two diseases of the lungs: Emphysema and chronic bronchitis. While emphysema causes the air sacs or alveoli within the lungs to be damaged, chronic bronchitis leads to inflammation of the airways connected to the lungs.
To function properly, organs, tissues, and cells require oxygen. Damage to the lungs and airways leads to COPD, reducing the amount of oxygen the lungs can take in. This reduces the amount of oxygen that passes from the lungs to the bloodstream. Hypoxemia is the medical term for low oxygen levels in the blood in people with COPD. Hypoxemia in COPD can lead to COPD hypoxia, in which the body's organs and tissues don't receive enough oxygen to function properly.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may cause the following respiratory symptoms:

  • shortness of breath
  • wheezing or whistling noises when breathing
  • tightness in the chest
  • persistent cough
  • coughs that produce excess mucus

Because COPD reduces oxygen levels in the blood, people may experience additional symptoms, such as:

  • difficulty completing physical tasks
  • difficulty sleeping
  • fatigue
If you have a symptom of shortness of breath or a known lung or heart condition, your doctor may recommend use of a pulse oximeter. The symptoms of COPD usually start mild and worsen over time. COPD is currently incurable, and people with the condition require lifelong treatment. People with COPD can manage their symptoms and maintain their quality of life with timely and effective treatment. A person's COPD severity and overall health will determine the type of treatment they receive. The majority of people with COPD need to make certain lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking or avoiding airborne irritants. Only severe cases of COPD require oxygen therapy.
